In Reply To $500 VR4 Brake package. My comments & questions inside... posted by TTony on December 13, 2001 at 03:05 PM

Message : Ok, here's what I know:
: 1. I HATE our stock brakes.
: 2. I don't want to spend $500 on replacement stock brakes that are slotted & cross-drilled.
: 3. I don't have $2k-$3k to spend on a brake upgrade package.
: 4. I want something that will improve my braking but not necessarily yank my teeth out.
: 5. The 3000GT brake upgrade is 12.5" dia. compared to our stock 11" dia. therefore pedal effort should be decreased assuming equal stopping distances.
: 6. If these brakes do not work any better than ours, why would Mitsubishi put them on a 3800lb. sports car?

Think about what you just said for a second. Nissan put the brakes they did on our car, didn't they? #6's logic does not work.

: 7. If these brakes work the same as ours, why aren't 3000GT owners switching to Z rotors (they are about $50 cheaper each)?
: 8. Can you imagine a 3000GT with 300ZX brakes? LOL, it's not a pretty thought.
: 9. The area on the rotor that is swept per revolution (assuming identical pads) is 15% larger on the 3000GT than on the 300ZX.

If you upgrade just rotor size, you gain 2 things:
More surface area to disipate heat (and a faster radial velocity to cool), and a mechanical torque advantage on the rotor. The breaker bar torque advantage example is a little extreme - We're talking more like, the equivalent of moving your hand to the very end of hte socket wrench to get a little extra leverage.

: 10. Is the piston diameter equal between the 3000GT and the 300ZX calipers?

Doesn't matter if you're retaining the Z calipers.

My biggest concern would be making sure whatever jury-rigged brackets I use to modify the caliper position are strong enough to risk my life over.
It doesn't matter if you have a 12 FOOT rotor, if your caliper detaches, game over kiddo.

About 9 months ago I tried to put together an affordable brake package for the Z - Did some homework, and found that the Porsche 928 S4 brake kit is a readily accessible, very phenominal brake package that can be adapted to multiple purposes, is fade free, and has great stopping power. It's a common upgrade for non-S4 928's, and the whole kit and kaboodle can be had for about 800 bucks. All we'd need is a bracket to adapt the caliper, and to make sure the rotor holes match up w/ our lug pattern.

Problem - The first caliper bracket that brakes, and I'm sued for everything I own, and then some, and then some, and then some. The 928 specialists wouldn't even consider it - if i want to buy a brake kit outright, great.. any modification is my problem.

If I make an intake for your car, and it suffocates your car, makes it sputter, die, run poorly, whatever - you get mad, you want your money back, or you tell your friends I'm an idiot. If I sell you a brake package that fails, your surviving family members own my ass.
